The Bridge & It’s Tonal Adjustment

The bridge is the most important part of your instrument for tonal adjustment?

The way it is shaped and balanced can maximize your instruments desired sound or be the cause for you to not receive the sound that you’ve always wanted and ultimately has always been available from your instrument.

Every note of your instrument passes through your bridge before reaching the body of the instrument.  The decorative cutouts of the bridge form the bridges actual working aspects. These cutouts create springs in the bridge. The mass of each spring impacts how much each spring vibrates in relationship to itself and every other spring.

In addition to the springs in the bridge, there are additional vibrating masses that further impact the bridge’s working aspects and the instrument’s sound. All areas of the bridge vibrate when a string is activated.

With this understanding of how the bridge functions for each note, then the removal of a minute amount of wood in a specific location markedly changes the balance, tonal voice, response, and resonance of the note and of your whole instrument. If you have a note, a register, an entire string or multiple strings that are hard to play or don’t speak well and/or the sound is unbalanced, is to strident, to dull, to bright, to dark and so on then an adjustment to specific areas on your bridge can improve these issues immediately.

These adjustments can be performed on your current bridge during the process of playing and discussing your needs in conjunction with David’s input adjusting the springs and masses.

These tonal adjustments to the bridge can create the sound you have always wished your instrument could produce.
